Ward Alderman Walter Burnett, Jr. Speaks at West Town Academy's
10th Annual Commencement
June 26, 2008 
On Thursday, June 26th, 2008 at 7:00pm the West Town Academy
(WTA) convened its annual commencement ceremony at Malcolm X
College Auditorium, celebrating the graduation and accomplishments
of its 10th student cohort. WTA's Class of 2008 is comprised
of 64 former Chicago Public School (CPS) dropouts from over 25
Wards throughout Chicago. These students received secondary
education, youth leadership development, career preparation,
and individualized mentoring services from West Town Academy
and were granted their high school diploma on June 26th. Read

for the Future: A New Community Career Training and Economic
Development Center

In 2008, Greater West Town Project is celebrating
20 years of providing comprehensive workforce development educational
services to disadvantaged community residents. This year
we have embarked on an exciting search to locate a permanent
home for our programs and to establish a new Community Career
Training and Economic Development Center, to grow our
programs and to expand our reach for many years to come. GWTP
recently has located a possible property in the 27th Ward, Humboldt

On January 11, 2008 Erwin McEwin, the recently appointed Director
of the Illionois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS),spent
the morning with West Town Academy students touring the school
and facilitating a round table discussion inviting students to
share about their challenges and successes in completing their

West Town's Woodworking Program Wins Minwax Community Service
Award
May 28, 2008 
On Tuesday, June 12, 2007, the Minwax
Company of Cedar Knolls, New Jersey will pay a visit to Greater
West Town Community Development Project (GWTP) to bestow the
Community Craftsman Award Program’s Grand Prize on Greater
West Town’s Woodworkers Training Program. The day
will begin with a press conference and presentation of the $5,000
check and supply of Minwax products. Minwax will then provide
lunch to the guests, followed by a workshop on wood finishing
presented by TV personality and author Bruce Johnson. The
Minwax Company is a manufacturer of woodworking finishes and
strong supporter of community involvement. Read
